So soon Mardi Gras season is coming up and I thought it would be a really great idea to make these skillet cinnamon rolls and jazz them up a bit with some tri-colored sprinkles. So I started out taking pictures of the rolls from plain to glazed to sprinkled. Well, I decided I didn't like it the pictures with the sprinkles... in person the rolls looked fine but I just couldn't seem to capture that in the pictures (which you will see below) . But with that all being said, the cinnamon rolls are fantastic especially when they are warm and gooey out of the oven!
Have you ever heard of a King Cake? These are typically made during the Mardi Gras season and a small plastic baby is hidden in it. The person who finds it is crowned the king or queen of the night and have the responsibility of making the cake the following year. While I have never made a cake, I have made these King Cake donuts which would be a great Mardi Gras treat also. If you are looking for a savory dish that is served during this time, be sure to check out this Jambalaya dish that is made in one pot, easy to do and has the right amount of spice. It makes a great comforting dish.
When I was growing up, we celebrated Fat Tuesday (the day before Lent starts) with a sweet treat called Castoniole, which is maybe not the correct spelling but the recipe is in my mom's handwriting and passed down to me. They are like fried donut holes with anise, lemon and drizzled with warm honey. Since we only heat these once a year, I always get my fill! Can't wait to get them again soon.
Hope you enjoy these skillet cinnamon rolls which can be made any time of the year!! And no Mardi Gras would be complete without a fun cocktail from my friend Lisa!
