~Iron Skillet Apple Pie~
Apple season is just around the corner and if you are like us, it might be your favorite pie in the {www} whole wide world. It is definitely one we never get tired of and since we have an apple tree, we make a lot of pie!
Usually I make my mine in a regular pie plate but coming across some recipes that use a skillet really piqued my interest.
Surprise your family with a classic apple pie by trying this recipe in an iron skillet
I think before we go much further, we should talk about what kind of apples you like to use. Our tree is a Regent but right now they aren't ready so I used two different kinds from the store - Honey Crisp and Granny Smith.
The combination of the two apples was perfect, not too sweet and not too tart.
What ingredients will you need to make a skillet apple pie?
- Apples
- Pie Crust (I used pre-made for this recipe)
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
- Nutmeg
- Egg
- Butter
- Light Brown Sugar
How do you make a pie in an iron skillet?
Other than cutting up the apples and tossing them with some spices, the rest of the pie is made right in the skillet.
First you will melt butter in the skillet and then add the brown sugar, stirring until it dissolves.
Next place one of the pie crusts in the bottom and sides of the skillet, spoon in the apples and place another crust on top.
Brush with an egg white mixture, sprinkle with sugar and cut some slits for the steam to escape.
What are tips for making a pie in an iron skillet?
You will want to make sure the pie is set on a rimmed baking sheet before placing in the oven. This pie will ooze some juices out and you don't to mess up your pretty oven!
After tossing the apples with the spices, you will notice that some liquid accumulates in the bottom. I left the extra liquid in the bowl.
This pie is a bit juicier and didn't want it too soggy. I've heard that you might want to add a bit of flour too with the spices but I did not try that.
If the crust is getting too brown near the end of baking, place foil over it.
Once the pie is baked, let cool on a baking rack for about 45 minutes before cutting.
Note: I wasn't prepared (but should have been) that when you place the pie crust in the skillet, the skillet is hot and might slide down the sides fast. I compensated by really tucking the top pie crust into the skillet and that worked well - see below.
A big o scoop of ice cream would be good too - I wish we had some!
